Medicare Prescription Drug Card Phone Scam (June 2005)
The WVU Center on Aging received this information detailing a report of the Medicare Prescription Drug Card Phone Scam targeting West Virginia Seniors. We have also listed several news stories covering the same topic in the News section.
The details are as follows:
A man named Brian phoned a Medicare beneficiary in St. Albans on May 31 and said he represented Med Pharmacy Express. He indicated he would need to withdraw $300 from her bank account to cover the cost of a drug card and made a reference to this being the Medicare prescription drug benefit. She informed the man she was covered under her husband's plan, but he persisted and indicated everyone had to participate. She finally gave in and supplied him with her bank account number. She was uncomfortable with her decision and phoned the State of West Virginia who called the Attorney General's Office and found out this is a scam. The lady then went to close her bank account and found that $398 had been withdrawn and also discovered from the branch employee that 5 other customers had recently closed their accounts after falling victim this scam.
Anyone receiving calls offering the benefit card should contact the police or the Attorney General's Office Consumer Protection Division (consumer@wvago.state.wv.us), Consumer Hotline: 1-800-368-8808.
