Phone Scam Hitting Area - Wal-Mart gift cards
(From WAJR News)
Morgantown, W.Va. (July 29, 2005) - Beware of a phone scam. The Better Business Bureau says there is a telemarketing company that is scamming people out of money by pretending to give away $200 Wal-Mart gift certificates for the mere price of $3.98 as part of a Wal-Mart anniversary giveaway. However, the telemarketers tell the victims they need their checking account information to withdraw the shipping and handling fee. But, once that information is given to the company much more than $3.98 is withdrawn. In some cases, people have lost up to $500. Better Business Bureau spokesperson Amanda Tietze says they called Wal-Mart and the company says it is not affiliated with the company perpetrating the scam and did not give permission for it to represent Wal-Mart. This is a nationwide scam and Tietze says they believe they are getting close to finding out what company is perpetrating the crime. She says they think it's a company in California, but that hasn't been confirmed. A similar scam was uncovered earlier this year involving Home Depot and K-Mart. Tietze says if you receive one of these calls, get the person and the business's name...the name of the business calling not who they represent. DO NOT give out any bank account or credit card information.
